Law update (1 July 2024):<\/strong> This article was written under the old codes. With effect from 1 July 2024, the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973 has been replaced by the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 (BNSS)<\/strong> and the Indian Evidence Act, 1872 by the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, 2023 (BSA)<\/strong>. Sections 451 and 457 CrPC discussed below correspond to Sections 497 and 503 BNSS<\/strong>. The old codes continue to govern offences committed and proceedings pending before that date.<\/p>\n
